Dubai Metro Red Line

Red and Green Lines

On 9 September 2011, as scheduled, the Green line of Dubai Metro opened for passenger service with all of the platforms equipped with Westinghouse Platform Screen Doors (WPSD).

WPSD who have facilities in the UK and China and are part of the global Knorr-Bremse Group, has now installed a total of 1,428 full height doors on the 102 platforms of Dubai Metro including at the largest underground station in the world, Union Station which has the capacity to handle over 22,000 passengers a year.

The platform screen doors enhance platform safety and create a cleaner and quieter environment for passengers by providing a barrier between the platform and the track and train. Operationally they allow economical air-conditioning of the platforms and also facilitate a clearly denoted boarding area and consistent dwell time for passenger loading and disembarkation; especially beneficial on a fully automated, driverless systems such as Dubai.

The first line on the Dubai Metro system, Red line, was opened exactly two years prior to the opening of the Green line, on 9 September 2009 (09/09/09). This line has proven to be extremely popular with locals and tourists alike as it travels across the city through a mixture of elevated and below ground sections. Enhancing the popularity of the systems are the stunning, air-conditioned, light filled platforms which have become almost a tourist attraction in themselves being individually colour themed with either an earth, water, fire or air treatment.
